APPLIED PROBABILITY

Section Applied Probability covers the area of various models, which are subject to uncertainty or random disturbances. Sometimes even naturally deterministic models become stochastic due to an incomplete information. There are also many models which have natural stochastic character, like reliability and queueing systems. Generally, we can consider static and dynamical random models.  Mayor tool used in applied probability is stochastic analysis, which is needed to study dynamic random models. Such modeling appears in particular in mathematics of finance and insurance. Evolution of infinite particle systems leads from finite to complicated limit models. Many biological models are of probabilistic nature. On the other hand important part of mathematical physics relies on various probabilistic models. Summarizing this section covers huge area of uncertain phenomena and applied probability is used both to model, calibrate real world data to estimate model parameters and finally if possible to control or at least to predict future values.

APPLIED TOPOLOGY

Applied topology is a relatively new scientific discipline on the border of mathematics, theoretical computer science and mathematical modeling. Since the beginning of the 21st century it has undergone intensive development as a separate discipline. The research methodology of Applied Topology combines geometrical methods derived from topology with numerical and probabilistic methods modified in such a way that they can be effectively implemented on computers, enabling the use of theoretical advanced methods of algebraic topology and geometry in mathematics, physics, data science, medicine, economics, political sciences and many other fields of science and industry.

Articles submitted to this section should present applications of topology to real-life problems or develop topological methods oriented towards applications and data analysis.

DECISION THEORY

Section Decision Theory covers the area of the mathematical study of strategies for optimal decision-making between options involving different risks or expectations of gain or loss depending on the outcome. The paper in this section should contain the mathematical model for decision making problem. The process of making choices should identify a decision, gathering information, and assessing alternative resolutions. Using a step-by-step decision-making process usually can help us make more deliberate, thoughtful decisions by organizing relevant information and defining alternatives.

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS

Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematical structures that can be considered “discrete” in a way analogous to discrete variables, having a bijection with the set of natural numbers. The section covers the area of research devoted to objects studied in DM, which includes integers, graphs, and statements in logic. Discrete objects can often be enumerated by integers; more formally, discrete mathematics has been characterized as the branch of mathematics dealing with countable sets (finite sets or sets with the same cardinality as natural numbers). Several fields of discrete mathematics, particularly theoretical computer science, graph theory, and combinatorics, are important in addressing the challenging bioinformatics problems associated with understanding the tree of life.

INFORMATION THEORY

Information Theory section collect papers devoted to the scientific study of the quantification, storage, and communication of information (messages) through communication systems. It covers a vigorous branch of mathematics fostering the development of other scientific fields, such as computer science, statistics, biology, behavioral science, neuroscience, and statistical mechanics. The part of techniques used in information theory are probabilistic in nature, and some view information theory as a branch of probability theory.

In a given set of possible events, the information of a message describing one of these events quantifies the symbols needed to encode the event optimally. It means that the obtained code word will determine the event unambiguously, and will have minimal length.

Coding theory is concerned with finding explicit methods, called codes, for increasing the efficiency and reducing the error rate of data communication over noisy channels to near the channel capacity. It is widely using the methods of discrete mathematics, abstract algebra and number theory.

Information theory also provides methodologies to separate real information from noise and to determine the channel capacity required for optimal transmission. Concepts, methods, and results from coding theory and information theory are widely used in cryptography and cryptanalysis.

Research works related to all these aspects are welcome.

MATHEMATICAL BIOLOGY

In the section Mathematics in Biology, we publish research papers devoted to various aspects of the relationship between biology and mathematics. It is devoted to the mathematical representation and modeling of biological processes, using techniques and tools of applied mathematics. Mathematical and theoretical biology, or biomathematics, is a branch of biology which employs theoretical analysis, mathematical models and abstractions of the living organisms to investigate the principles that govern the structure, development and behavior of the systems, as opposed to experimental biology which deals with the conduction of experiments to prove and validate the scientific theories. Some people call the field mathematical biology or biomathematics to stress the mathematical side, or theoretical biology to stress the biological side. Mathematical biology focuses on the use of mathematical tools to study biological systems. It can be useful in both theoretical and practical research. Describing systems in a quantitative manner means their behavior can be better simulated, and hence properties can be predicted that might not be evident to the experimenter. This requires precise mathematical models. The paper about the issue is welcome.

MATHEMATICAL CHEMISTRY

In the section Mathematical Chemistry we publish the paper devoted to the area of research engaged in novel applications of mathematics to chemistry. It concerns itself principally with the mathematical modeling of chemical phenomena, and some people called it computer chemistry. It should not be confused with computational chemistry, but papers presenting interesting research in computational chemistry will be accepted also. Major areas of research in mathematical chemistry include chemical graph theory, which deals with topologies such as the mathematical study of isomerism and the development of topological descriptors or indices which find application in quantitative structure-property relationships; and chemical aspects of group theory, which finds applications in stereochemistry and quantum chemistry. Another important area is molecular knot theory and circuit topology, which describe the topology of folded linear molecules such as proteins and Nucleic Acids. Papers on these topics are welcome.

MATHEMATICAL ECONOMICS

Mathematical economics is a discipline of economics, which applies mathematical methods to analyse economic problems and rigorously represent and test economic theories.  In broad terms, mathematics allows economists to build quantitative models of observable phenomena. Such models, after verification and optimisation, can propose solutions of interest to regulators. Other analytical approaches beyond optimisation (e.g. viability theory or dynamic games) are of particular interest for this section.

MATHEMATICS IN MEDICINE

In the section Mathematics in Medicine, we publish research papers devoted to various aspects of the relationship between medicine and mathematics. The modern era of health care is now inexorably linked to the application of mathematical and computational analysis to offer digital-age diagnostics, novel pharmacotherapy, computer-assisted and robot-assisted interventions, epidemiological data mining, and evidence synthesis. These have also been supported by the application of mathematics to a plethora of research methods that include computational physiology, genomics, and more recently the development of systems medicine through the application of systems biology. Many physician-scientists are celebrated for applying arithmetic to the descriptions of body function (such as pulse rate by Avicenna and circulatory volume by William Harvey). Let us remember also Pitcairne and his idea of iatromathematics. All contemporary research on the mathematical ideas in the care of health can be the subject of the paper in this section.

OPERATIONS RESEARCH

Operations research is a discipline that deals with the application of advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. More precisely, this discipline, making use of mathematical modeling, statistical analysis or mathematical optimization, seeks for optimal or nearly optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. Since it focuses on practical applications, operations research overlaps with other disciplines such as an industrial engineering, an operational management, or an organization science. Operations research is often concerned with determining the maximum (of profit, reward) or minimum (of loss, cost) of some real-world objective unctions.

OPTIMIZATION AND CONTROL THEORY

The section generally covers the wide range of mathematical control theory both deterministic and stochastic. Despite a huge increase of research activities and many remarkable theoretical results in the area of optimal control, there are still theoretical challenges and open problems. Thus, the papers in this section will present new, mainly theoretical, results for continuous-time systems as well as for discrete-time linear and nonlinear control systems. It should be pointed out, that the main purpose of the articles is to develop theory and optimal control problems for a class of dynamical systems modeling of real engineering, biological or economics processes. Hence, some new ideas and concepts of mathematical modeling, synthesis, and practical realizations of control strategy will be discussed from the mathematical point of view.

STATISTICS

Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. In the section, the paper devoted to the background research in the area are published. Statistics deals with every aspect of data, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. Two main statistical methods are used in data analysis: descriptive statistics, which summarize data from a sample using indexes such as the mean or standard deviation, and inferential statistics, which draw conclusions from data that are subject to random variation (e.g., observational errors, sampling variation). Inferences on mathematical statistics are made under the framework of probability theory, which deals with the analysis of random phenomena. Various aspects of mentioned research are the subject of the paper considered in the section.

Peer Review Process

Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae, Series III, Mathematica Applicanda is the peer review journal. The reviewing process is applied to ensure that good science is published. Our referees play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of MA. All manuscripts or review papers and expository papers are peer reviewed following the procedure outlined below. Our journal takes the system where the authors can choose the editor suitable for the reviewing process of their papers during the submission process or in the separate letter to the editor. Therefore, choose one of the editors from the Editorial Team and write his/her name on the separate letter to the editor. It is not enough to choose the section when the section has more than one sectional editor.

Initial manuscript evaluation The Editor first evaluates all manuscripts. Those rejected at this stage are insufficiently original, have serious scientific flaws, have poor grammar or English language, or are outside the aims and scope of the MA journal. Those that meet the minimum criteria are passed on to at least 2 experts for review. These may include members of the Editorial Board. Authors of manuscripts rejected at this stage are usually informed within 2-3 weeks of receipt.

Type of peer review This journal employs single blind reviewing, where the referees remain anonymous to authors throughout the process. Authors, however, are not anonymous to reviewers.

Selection of the reviewers. Referees are matched to papers according to their expertise. Our list is constantly being updated. We welcome suggestions for referees from the author(s) though these recommendations may or may not be used.

Referee reports Referees are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript:

  • is original

  • is methodologically sound

  • follows appropriate ethical guidelines

  • has results which are clearly presented and support the conclusions

  • correctly references previous relevant work

  • has appropriate abstract, keywords and subject classification.

Referees are not expected to correct or copy edit manuscripts. Language correction is not part of the peer review process.

How long does the review process take? The invitation of the reviewer asks to review of the paper within 6 weeks. Typically manuscripts are reviewed within 1-2 months of submission. Essentially longer review times are not uncommon, especially for papers on esoteric topics where finding qualified referees can itself take months. Revised manuscripts are usually returned to the initial referees upon receipt. Referees may and frequently do request more than one revision of a manuscript.

Final report A final decision to accept or reject the manuscript is sent to the author along with any recommendations made by the referees, and usually included verbatim comments by the referees. The decision could be:

  • Accept submission

  • Revision required

  • Resubmit for revision

  • Decline submission

Editor's decision is final Referees advise the Editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the article.

Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement

Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement

of the journal

Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III

Polish Mathematical Society as the publisher of the journal understands that the publication of an article in a peer-reviewed journal constitutes an essential contributor to the development of knowledge. It also reflects the quality of work of the authors and the institutions they represent. Peer-reviewed articles support and embody the scientific method. Thus, there is an urgent need to set the standards of an expected ethical behavior of all parties involved in the process of publishing: the author, the editor, the reviewer, the publisher and the society concentrated around scientific journals.

Based on the guidelines developed by the Publication Ethics Committee (COPE) and available at www.publicationethics.org, and taking into account the rules of the EMS policy regarding conflicts of interest adopted by the Publisher of the Polish Mathematical Society , progress principles was developed regarding publishing ethics and rules of conduct to malpractices in the publishing process of the journal "Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III".

It is the Journal's consistent policy to improve the journal constantly through publishing the highest quality original scientific articles using a fair and ethical selection and peer-reviewing of submitted manuscripts.

Editors' Duties

Decision Regarding Publishing

The final decision as to whether a given paper will be peer-reviewed and then published in the " Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III" lies with the Section Editors and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal. Once the Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editors have determined that the submitted manuscript is suitable for review (in particular that it meets the requirements provided in Instructions for Authors), a single-blind review model is applied. It means the identity of the reviewers is not revealed to the authors and the remaining reviewers. The decision is made based on the content of the paper, the analysis of the veracity of the presented results and once all concerns regarding a possible breach of copyright, libel or plagiarism have been dispelled. The decision, communicated to the authors immediately, involves opinions from Associate Editors, peer reviewers and, if necessary, consultation with the Journal's Editorial Board.

Editors shall be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, and apologies and to withdraw (retract) an article if its authors are in breach of copyright, have committed libel or plagiarism.

"Fair Play" Principle

Race, gender, sexual orientation, origin, citizenship, political or religious beliefs of the authors, of the papers submitted for publication shall not have any effect on their evaluation by the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors.

Confidentiality

Editors shall keep all information regarding the manuscripts provided by their authors confidential. Manuscript-specific information must not be discussed or revealed in any way to a third party - it will remain known only to the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Managing Editors and the reviewers selected for the review of the given manuscript.

Conflict of Interest Disclosure

Editors shall remain objective and not allow personal beliefs or professional or institutional interests to influence their opinion whether a given manuscript is suitable for publishing or not. They must not use the information included in the submitted articles for personal research purposes without a prior expressed consent of the authors. In case of a conflict of interest arising from competition, cooperation or any other relations with either of the authors or institutions related to a given manuscript, an Associate Editor or another member of the Journal's Editorial Board shall assume the competence of the Editor-in-Chief in deciding whether the paper will be published or not. Editors shall be obliged to disclose any such conflict of interest and to publish a respective post-factum explanation in a case when such conflict has been found to exist. Other actions are also possible, namely publishing a correction or a retraction.

Appeals Process

If an author decides to appeal the decision to not publish their manuscript, the final decision in this respect rests with the Editor-in-Chief. Having consulted the Associate Editors and the reviewers involved with the review of a given manuscript, the Editor-in-Chief may change the original decision to reject the manuscript for publication.

Corrections and Retraction

The online version of the paper may be corrected by editors, yet the date of correction must be provided. If following publication a significant error is found in the paper or its substantial portions is deemed invalid, the article should be retracted with an explanation of the reason for the retraction (fraud, error, plagiarism or so-called "redundant publication"). Such retraction may also be considered if the published article is found to contain confidential information acquired by the author from a third party and unfairly used in the paper.
The decision to retract a paper rests with the Editor-in-Chief after consultations with other editors (Associate Editors, the Editorial Board of the "Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III") as well as the reviewers involved in the review.

Authors' Duties

Requirements Regarding Submission of Manuscripts

When submitting a paper to the " Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III ", authors shall use the on-line procedure or they should enclose the cover letter, in which they represent that their manuscript does not breach copyright of any person and that has not been published or is being considered for publication elsewhere. They are also to provide precise information regarding the contribution of particular coauthors to the manuscript.

For previously published graphic elements submitted to editors (tables, figures), authors must provide permission to republish from the owner of a copyright.

Instructions for authors regarding the preparation and the submission of a manuscript are available on the " Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III " website.

Originality

Only the authors' proper original manuscripts may be submitted for publication, otherwise being rejected or retracted (based on an unethical behavior of the authors following publishing). Any form of plagiarism is unacceptable, including claiming the work, words, data, theoretical concepts and conclusions of others or self-plagiarism - republishing portions of the author's previous works in order to present them as new ideas. Submitting a paper for publication in more than one journal at once shall be deemed unethical and damnable.

The work and words of other authors must be properly cited. Authors should also reference all sources of their inspiration, including the published articles that contributed to the creation of the manuscript.  Exceptionally, it is possible to reprint or translate a previously published article, yet such work must be properly marked and the consent of the owner of the copyright is required.

Authorship of Manuscripts

Only those who have made a major contribution to a paper may be deemed its authors. In the cover letter, particular coauthors shall determine the type and extent of their contribution in the preparation of the manuscript. The names and the role of those who have assisted with the research/publication, but are not considered as authors, should be mentioned in the "Acknowledgement" section.

The Journal's editors shall publicize and condemn all reveled cases of ghostwriting, i.e. failure to reveal in the manuscript the extent of the contribution of persons who have virtually contributed to its creation, and the cases of quest authorship, i.e. attributing the authorship to those whose contribution has been minor or almost non-existent.

Source Citations

Authors must acknowledge sources of all provided data and reference in the article text all relevant prior work.

Scientific Fraud

Authors shall be obliged to present their results in a transparent, accurate and fair manner - submitted manuscripts must contain only the data, statistical analysis, and results that are believed to be accurate. Premeditated publication of inaccurate or unverified results is considered unethical and unacceptable.

Conflict of Interest Disclosure

Authors are expected to disclose - in the cover letter - and in the final part of the article, any potential conflict of interest of any nature that might affect the results or their interpretation. Authors should also ensure that no contractual relations or proprietary considerations exist that would compromise the publication of a submitted manuscript.

Errors after Publication

If authors become aware of an error or inaccuracy after the manuscript has been published, they should immediately notify editors so that a correction/retraction can be made.

Reviewers' Duties

Confidentiality

Reviewers shall keep all unpublished manuscripts and related materials confidential. Manuscripts can only be made available to others upon the permission of editors or the publication staff.

Objectivity

During the process of review, reviewers shall do their utmost to assess the quality of the reviewed paper objectively and accurately. Comments and opinions provided by reviewers that are returned to authors should be impartial, clear and concise.

If a reviewer does not feel qualified enough to evaluate a given manuscript, they may decline to review it.

Timely Peer-Reviewing

Reviewers of manuscripts submitted to the " Mathematica Applicanda. Annales Societatis Mathematicae Polonae Series III" are volunteers believed to have other employment commitments. Therefore, prior to engaging themselves in the review process, they should make sure they will be able to complete the review within a specified time frame. Otherwise, they should decline to review the manuscript. They are expected by the Journal's publication staff to submit the review within two weeks following the day of taking up the task. If reviewers need additional time, they should inform the Managing Editor or the Editor-in-Chief immediately about the delay. Reviewers may decline to review a manuscript without providing any reason.

Conflict of Interest Disclosure

The author of an article and its reviewer should not maintain any close relations, either personal (family ties) or professional (hierarchy). If a reviewer finds that evaluating a given manuscript is in conflict with their interest, their obligation is to decline to review. The conflict of interest can be of a competitive, financial, or collaborative nature - on a personal, company, or institutional area. The reviewers must not use the information included in the manuscript they read for a personal gain.

Any interaction or relationship between author and reviewer that could be construed as a conflict of interest should be disclosed in writing to the Editor-in-Chief along with the refusal to review.

Originality

If during the reading of a manuscript the reviewer realizes that another author's intellectual property has been infringed, they shall notify the Managing Editor who will, in turn, notify their superior. The Editor-in-Chief, either himself/herself or through his/her designee, shall make the final decision regarding the publication of the paper.

Source Citations

Reviewers should identify and show the authors all sources and published works they deem crucial that have not been mentioned and cited in the paper.

Comments to Authors

Reviewers shall provide comments to authors and the publication staff at all times keeping in mind that their common effort enhance the quality of the reviewed manuscript. It is their responsibility to provide authors, through the publication staff, with clear, constructive and detailed comments regarding the reviewed work. This principle also applies to manuscripts the reviewers find not suitable for publication. Providing authors only with the information on conclusions drawn from the review, and in particular, the failure to inform them about essential drawbacks, even if their paper has been positively assessed, is reprehensible.
